Oster Versa 1400-Watt Professional Performance Blender
The Oster Versa 1400-watt blender is an impressively powerful appliance capable of much more than its design will allow. If you are in search of a high-performance countertop blender, you will not be disappointed by the Versa. In fact, consumer reviews are impressively positive for this machine.
While I acknowledge that this blender will definitely hold up its end of the bargain when it comes to any blending task, I am slightly saddened by its wasted power. This blender could be capable of much more. Its 1400-watt motor could potentially power it as a hybrid or all-in-one blender, greatly increasing its functionality.
In this review, I will walk you through some of the Versa’s most notable qualities and features. Together, we will look at its benefits and its drawbacks. I will do my best, throughout this process, to put aside my personal sadness about its lost potential, in order to focus on how it can be most useful to you in your kitchen. At the conclusion of this article, you should be able to easily discern whether or not this blender fits your needs.
Power and Performance
This blender’s 1400-watt motor is quite impressive. For comparison sake, consider that most countertop blenders feature motors within a range of 600 to 1000 watts. Of course, like this one, there are some out there which feature more powerful motors, but they are few and far between and quite pricey. The power of this motor makes this blender stand out among the rest – especially those of a similar price.
Equating to almost 2 horsepower, the Versa’s motor can easily power its blades to spin at incredibly high speeds for long periods of time while facing dense and difficult foods. I would not hesitate to use this blender to break down frozen fruits and vegetables. I also would not hesitate to run it for the 5 to 10 minutes required for making nut butter.
I want to begin by saying that the milkshake blade is not included with the purchase of this blender – it must be purchased separately. This blade has been specially designed to mix ice cream and various other ingredients into the perfect milkshake without liquefying the entire concoction, as regular blades likely would.
This leads me back to my initial disappointment with this this blender – why doesn’t it come with multiple attachments? This machine is already extremely affordable given its power, so, at the very least, I would love to see more purchasable attachments sold separately. The motor in this machine is plenty strong enough to power it as a food processor and mixer as well. I would have loved to see Oster take advantage of this fact and turn this machine into a hybrid/all in one blender combination machine.
In addition to the 1400-watt (nearly 2 horsepower) motor, the settings are what make this blender worth its price and possibly more. Whereas many blenders operate at only one speed, this blender features 8 different speed settings. You can easily adjust the speed using the speed dial, matching the speed to whatever task you are working on.
Lower speeds will slowly break down food, allowing you to keep a close eye on those things you wish to chop or mix. Higher speeds will allow you to liquefy the contents of the blender. The highest speed is specially designed for simultaneously creating and heating soups. At this speed, the blades will rotate so quickly that they will not only liquefy the ingredients, they will also create the heat necessary to bring your soup to a perfect serving temperature.
In addition to these regular speed settings, this blender features three pre-programmed settings which incorporate blending of various speeds with pulse action to assist you in creating perfectly timed blending for dips/spreads, smoothies, and soup.
Two Pitcher Options
One really interesting thing about this blender is that it is available in two different designs. Upon purchase, you will be required to select from either a short, fat pitcher or a tall, skinny pitcher. Regardless of your choice, you will receive a BPA-free plastic pitcher with a 64-ounce capacity. The capacity remains the same; the only difference between the two pitchers is their shape.
At first, upon seeing this, I thought, “Well, that’s neat. It’s nice to be able to choose between two different options.” I really liked that the shorter pitcher could easily slide beneath any cupboard. A problem I have had with some of my blenders and juicers has been finding a storage space; I couldn’t leave them on the countertop since they would not slide beneath my upper cabinets.
The more I thought about this, though, I wondered what the point of a tall pitcher was to begin with. I’m not a physicist, so I could be wrong, but I do not think the height of the pitcher makes much of a difference in its performance. My research into different types of blenders hasn’t shown that consumers are more impressed with one or the other type. If I am correct, why bother making any blender pitcher too tall to fit beneath cabinets? Why not just make them all short? I honestly do not have an answer for this.
Although I do not anticipate the height of the pitcher as making much of a difference in terms of performance, the choice will be yours in the end. You will need to ask yourself if it is more important to trust what is tried and true or if it is more important to be able to fit the blender and pitcher beneath you cabinets. If your cabinets are quite tall or you do not plan to place your blender on the countertop at all, this is probably of absolutely no concern to you.
In this review, we looked at the various features of the Oster Versa 1400-Watt Professional Performance Blender. We discussed the strength and performance potential of its motor as well as the various speed settings and pre-programmed settings it comes with. We also talked a little bit about the two different types of pitchers you can select, and my overall opinion is that this is a high-quality machine worth its price and then some. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this blender to a family member or friend.
If you are looking for a blender which will stand the test of time and is likely to stand up to almost anything you throw at it, this may be the blender you are looking for. However, although this blender is rather strong and could be capable of a great many tasks, it does not appear to have purchasable attachments which would make it usable as a hybrid or all-in-one blender. If you are looking for something with those abilities, you will want to continue your search. Head over to our hybrid blender reviews for more information on what is available to meet those needs.
